Premature birth rates with Prof Jonathan Morris AM | 2021 May

Listen to the podcast discussion with Ashlee Tenberge and Professor Jonathan Morris, Kolling Institute Director - Women & Babies Research, to learn about the impact of premature delivery on babies & current trends in twin pregnancy vs singleton pregnancy and the pursuit of better outcomes for multiple birth children in relation to premature delivery. Despite the rate of multiple birth in Australia remaining steady at 1.4% of births for over a decade and with the rate of multiple birth from assisted reproductive technology declining significantly since 2005, there is an increasing trend towards planned preterm and early term birth in all twins.

You will hear about:
  • the impact of early birth on the short and long-term health of twins and higher order multiples
  • the need for funding new research into the variations, management and timing of birth for multiple pregnancies
  • the development of twin pregnancy growth charts to make it easier for clinicians to identify twins and higher order multiples at risk of complications and when early birth is necessary.
